The office of the Electoral Commission Ghana has refuted the claims that its Chairperson, Jean Mensa attended the New Patriotic Party Delegates Conference. According to the press release, the woman identified in the picture is not the Chairperson.
On Sunday, December 11, 2021, the NPP held a Delegate Conference at Kumasi in the Ashanti. All the party’s big-wigs were present. Incidents and speeches that surfaced from the conference have flooded social media.
Apart from rebuts from the camps of the NPP and NDC, a new dimension has set in. A woman was seen at the conference that most people believe it’s the Chair of the Electoral Commission Ghana.
The few that believe it’s not her are also saying it’s the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
Some section of Ghanaians accused the Chairperson of conniving with NPP to rig the 2020 elections. In fact, they believe that the ruling party instituted Jean Mensa to carry their bid for them. So, the Chairperson appearing at the conference would have confirmed their allegations.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission should be an independent body that oversees elections in the country. Therefore, there is an expectation from the citizens that its stakeholders should not involve themselves in politics. This will ensure peace as the citizens will have trust and courage in the institution.
As a result, responding to the claims, the commission has advised Ghanaians to disbelieve the news. According to the commission, there are individuals within the country that are looking for possible means to tarnish the image of the Chairperson.
